Pinehurst, N.C. (Sept. 21, 2020) The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has recognized the Pinecrest High School athletic program for placing 3rd in the annual Wells Fargo Cup. The award acknowledges the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four conferences for the 2019-20 academic year. Pinecrest is included in the 4A conference, together with the largest high schools in the state. “Our Pinecrest coaches and athletes are proud to put a great product on the court and fields to not only represent our school but our outstanding community that supports all our programs” said Jeff Hewitt, Pinecrest Athletic Director. “The culture in our school and Athletic Department is at an all time high. The recognition of 3rd place in the Wells Fargo Cup is an honor because it represents our entire Athletic Department. It is truly a great day to be a Patriot! It was a very good year for Pinecrest. The Patriots won conference championships in Men’s Basketball, Men’s Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Golf, Women’s Tennis, Volleyball and shared the conference championship in Men’s Soccer.
Wells Fargo Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state championship events in all sports. The 2019-2020 season was cut short, due to COVID-19, and therefore, no spring sports points were awarded in this year’s competition. Placing first was Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. Green Hope High School in Cary placed 2nd. The Wells Fargo Cup, formerly the Wachovia Cup, has become the symbol of overall sports excellence among high schools in North Carolina. Since 1979 the Cup has gone to the schools which have the best overall interscholastic sports programs in each of the four classifications: 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. The program is sponsored by the NCHSAA and one of its corporate sponsors, Wells Fargo.
The NCHSAA is the governing organization of high school athletics in North Carolina.
